Renato strolled in, looking disheveled. He wore a cheap suit that didn’t fit him right and made sure his shirt was wrinkled. He had business cards for an import/export business with his cell number, which was Italian. He used his real first name as no one knew him, and it would be less for him to remember.

“Hola, I’m looking for Spider.”

“I don’t know any Spider,” said the scruffy bartender.

Renato pulled out a business card and rolled a hundred-dollar bill around it.

“Well, if you eventually know him, have him call me.”

The bartender took the money and began to wipe down the bar. Renato could see by the mirror’s reflection that no one was in the back room as the door was cracked open. He got a block down the street, and his phone rang with a blocked number.

“This is Spider. Why are you looking for me?”

“I was told you were a businessman, and I’d like to do business.”

“Who gave me my name?”

“A friend from Cali who likes to import things. Young things. You are in the export business, no?”

“What year imports are you looking for.”

“No antiques. I’m into Spanish collectibles, around ten years of age, that have never been exported. Unused, if you know what I mean.

“I will bring a selection of goods to look over. Go to the back of the bar and knock four times slowly at 1:15. Got it?”

“Got it.”

They hung up, and Renato texted Rick.

He took the bait. More info to come.

10-4.

Renato had a little time to kill before the meetup. He entered another bar just down the street and ordered a light beer. He slowly sipped on the beer and kept an eye on the clock. Once it got after 1:00 a.m., he paid his tab and sauntered towards Bar Diana. He ducked into the alley behind the bar, waited a few minutes, and approached the rear door of the back room. When his watch hit 1:15 a.m., he knocked four times hard. There was some rustling behind the door, then it opened, and he was staring down the barrel of a Colt .45. He froze and raised his hands to show he wasn’t holding. Another man frisked him, pushed him inside, and plopped him down on a chair in the middle of the room. A man with spiderweb tattoos and gold teeth stepped out of an office and into the room with a manilla folder. Renato knew that it had to be Spider.

“Take a look at the merchandise. Tell me what you like.”

Spider sat down and pushed the manilla folder over to Renato’s side. He was watching Renato’s every move and expression. Renato played the part. He had to sell it. His instinct was to get angry and frown at the sight of the young girl’s photos. They were all so young. Some looked like they couldn’t be over eight years old. He flipped over each picture and sucked in the air like he was aroused. He came across one girl and pulled her photo aside.
